The Walking Tour City Guide series provides an engaging bridge between conventional tourist books that contain less information on architecture and academic books that are often too specialized.
A Walking Tour: Ahmedabad—the first to focus on an Indian city—is furnished with hand-drawn illustrations, taking the reader from building to building, providing information on its history, architectural styles, its owners and architects.

Focusing on the blend of medieval and modern architecture in Ahmedabad, the authors explore the magnificent old city and the historic pol houses. They also shed light on the buildings built by modern masters such as Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. From havelis and temples, to mosques, markets, and buildings made possible because of Mahatma Gandhi, the authors present a lively, illustrated tour of this city which has seen Mughal, Maratha and British influences in its culture, food and architecture.

Matthijs van Oostrum graduated summa cum laude from TU Delft in the Netherlands, with a masters in Urbanism. After graduation, he has worked on several projects at the office of Balkrishna Doshi, one of India’s most distinguished architects, in Ahmedabad.
He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Melbourne.

Dr. Gregory Bracken, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the TU Delft in the Netherlands, is the author and illustrator of the Walking Tour City Guide series. He worked for several years as an architect in Asia, and has authored several books and articles on the architectural facets of Asian cities.
