“…beautifully written... Launching this series is a good attempt at making information about historical sites accessible to children..” —Jaya Bhattacharji Rose
(Set of Five Children's book, 32 pages of each books)
Children, look around you. Our world is beautiful, with snowy mountain peaks and sparkling rivers, home to many peoples, animals, birds and trees. There are also mighty monuments built by our forefathers which have stood fast for centuries, enriching our lives and history.
These precious monuments and natural landscapes must be protected. That is why governments and institutions like the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) work together to help keep them safe.
UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites are places around the world that are remarkable examples of natural or man-made landscapes and architecture. As of 2018, there are 37 such celebrated sites in India. We need to take care of these sites and protect them.
For the first time, Mapin Publishing is producing a series of children’s books about UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in India. We hope that the books will make these places seem like old friends, waiting to meet you again. So, young reader, let us begin our exciting journey across India!
Supported by:
The Roshni World Heritage Sites of India series aims to introduce India’s young readers to the richness of our natural and cultural heritage through UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites. Produced in association with Tata Trusts and with the blessings of UNESCO, these books offer children five exciting stories, authored by renowned historians and conservationists and beautifully illustrated by accomplished artists.

Travelling through Time
Story by Subuhi Jiwani
Illustrations by Kishan Dev
ISBN: 978-93-85360-51-0
Author:
Subuhi Jiwani walked into Bombay’s historic buildings by chance and fell in love with them. Recently, she narrated the story of one such building—and its people—on video. She has found that the stories of these buildings are endless. She returns to them again and again to learn more about her city’s history and her own childlike awe.
Artist:
Kishan Dev has worked for a lot of blockbuster Bollywood movies and TV series but his real love is drawing and storytelling. He once went to Florence, Italy to study oil painting, and is now exploring the French techniques of plein–air painting with his friends. He loves to paint outdoors and also to encourage others to sketch!
Artist:
Gopal Limbad heads the design team at Mapin and he has helped make the Roshni books look beautiful. He loves art and has a degree in Fine Art from M.S. University in Vadodara. Gopal collaborated with Kishan to create the illustrations on the cover and inside cover page, as well as on pages 9, 13, 14–15, 19 (left), 22–23, 27 and 28.
Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary
The Kingdom of Birds
Story by Dr. Erach Bharucha
Illustrations by Maya Ramaswamy
ISBN: 978-93-85360-48-0
Author:
Dr. Erach Bharucha is a doctor by day and eco–hero by night! He has been working to preserve India’s beautiful natural heritage for many decades now. He enjoys taking children to sanctuaries and other such areas to help them learn about nature, not just from books but also through observation and interaction with the environment. While much of India’s natural heritage has been destroyed, Dr. Bharucha is optimistic that children today will later in life be able to protect our forests, rivers and animals.
Artist:
As children, Maya Ramaswamy and her sisters spent all their play–time with creepy crawlies. Their busy father had a deep respect for life, and taught them that wild creatures were also living beings. Maya grew up with a sense of wonder and love for India’s wilderness. She
has illustrated several books on wildlife and conservation for children, and she hopes that children will make time to observe birds and to admire butterflies.
Mahabalipuram
The Ganga Comes to Tamil Nadu

Illustrations by Y. Venkatesh
ISBN: 978-93-85360-49-7

The Descent of the Ganges at Mahabalipuram is one of Nanditha Krishna’s favourite works of art. This huge carving, with animals, people and gods living together in harmony, has inspired her to develop programmes to save our forests and rivers from being destroyed. She knows a lot about the culture and heritage of Tamil Nadu, and she has written many books about art, religion and the environment.

Qutb Minar
Head in the Clouds
Story by Narayani Gupta
Illustrations by Shashi Shetye
ISBN: 978-93-85360-50-3
Author:
Narayani Gupta has happy memories of childhood picnics at the lovely monuments in Delhi– in particular, she recalls climbing up to the top of the Qutb and gazing down across a landscape sparkling in the clear air. Her students and she often discuss how old buildings and landscapes can help us understand the past. She was part of a group that organised heritage walks and acted as chowkidar s to protect historic buildings. She would like people to ‘pocket’ their mobile phones, otherwise they miss so much– like the beauty of sunlight on old brick or the sight of a distant dome.
Artist:
As a child, Shashi Shetye used to draw huge crabs and sharks on the canvas of the Goa beach to impress his fishermen friends. This passion for art led him to illustrate several children’s books for more than twenty years. His hero is Mario Miranda, a Goan illustrator and cartoonist. Shashi loves conducting workshops to encourage children’s creativity, and his favourite pastime is to sketch a temple or church, surrounded by enthusiastic kids.
Sanchi
Where Tigers Fly and Lions Have Horns
Story by Sohail Hashmi
Illustrations by Pervez Rajan
ISBN: 978-93-85360-52-7
Author:
Sohail Hashmi loves travelling with family, friends and a camera to explore little–known places across India. He started the “Delhi Heritage Walks with Sohail Hashmi” in 2005 to introduce children, and now adults too, to the wonderful history and heritage of the city. He also makes films to help people learn more about India’s culture. He enjoyed writing this book because Sanchi is one of his favourite destinations, with its beautiful, 2000–year old carvings and long history.
Artist:
Pervez Rajan is an artist who has worked in many cities across India. This is lucky for him, because he also loves to travel and explore new places! He once illustrated the many monuments of Anegundi, near Hampi in Karnataka, to help tourists appreciate the beauty of the place. He is fascinated by details of architecture and carvings, and so depicting the many features of Sanchi was a pleasurable task for him. He hopes to continue to use his art to communicate with a wide range of people.
